The proposed Taunton River Trail would be a 22 + mile network of off-road trails and on-road bike lanes extending from Somerset northward through the city of Taunton along the Taunton River. The highlight of the trail would be a 2-mile segment in Dighton through Sweets Knoll State Park, with pristine views of the Taunton River.
The trail is currently in conceptual design with an active Taunton River Trail Committee meeting monthly to plan it segment by segment. The committee includes representatives from the Taunton River Watershed Alliance (TRWA), the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), the Wildlands Trust, the National Park Service, the city of Taunton and the Southeastern Regional Planning & Economic Development District (SRPEDD). The original concept for the trail was completed in 1994 by the Conway School of Design for SRPEDD. A copy of this study can be found here. The trail continues to be an integral component of SRPEDD's Regional Bike Plan in its 2012 Regional Transportation Plan. |
